Podcast #2 & 3: How to find your running motivation
This week’s podcast brings the High Altitude Training Institute’s Greg, John, and Tom back to chat about a subject that leads many runners astray: motivation. In fact, this topic evoked so much discussion, we decided to dedicate two weeks to it! In this two-part podcast, you will discover how to find your running motivation.
Everyone knows what it’s like to be on fire for running: stoked about every easy run, workout, and race. It’s a great feeling, and typically leads to not only better running but also better overall health and fitness. Unfortunately, the other side of the coin, feeling unmotivated, is something that most of us have had to experience as well. We know what it’s like to dread heading out for the next run, worrying about the big long run coming up on the weekend. Or even dreading a race that in past seasons was an event that you looked forward to with great anticipation.
Part 1: Get back on track
So how do we get back on track? (Pun sort of intended). Well, we are going to provide some concepts taken from both personal experience and sports psychology research. This week will focus on motivation itself and how to turn things around. Do you know what motivates you? Is it intrinsic or extrinsic motivators? And how can you get out of a rut and pick up some momentum in the right direction? Listen to part 1 and get some pointers on how to find your running motivation.!
Part 2: Overtraining, wrong training plan, or hitting a plateau?
In this second part, motivation is still the main topic, but some new areas will be covered! How can you tell if you’re overtraining? Can that lead to being unmotivated? What if you’re just following the wrong training plan all-together? How would you know, and how do you turn things around? Lastly we’ll discuss the principle of diminishing returns, a topic that Jack Daniels has addressed explicitly. And we are going to break it down for you and how to find your running motivation.
